On the Way to First Sight Reading

Hi!

Below you´ll find the extract with which you´ll start getting ready for this practice.

How to proceed with a text you see for the first time?

  • Read the text quickly and get the gist of it - the main idea. What is it about?

  • Decide if the vocabulary is formal or informal.

  • Then scan the text for nouns, verbs, adjectives & adverbs. Rank them according to their linguistic relevance in the text. Do they repeat themselves? Does that serve any purpose?
  • Are there any modal auxiliaries? How would you use them, in their strong or weak form? Are there any verbs of incomplete predication?

  • Now have a look at punctuation: does it highlight any word or words? What about commas and full stops - do they help you spot the pauses?

  • Make sure you use strong and weak forms when you read.
  • If needed, check the pronunciation of words in your dictionary! VIP - it´s a strong asset in your practice.

  • Read the text aloud  meaningfully, and listen to your own voice.
  • What have you noticed? Are you respecting the analysis above? Or are you going along your own way?

  • Enjoy the story!

The evening, after my grandmother had given me my bath, she took me once again into the living-room for another story.
“Tonight,” the old woman said, “I am going to tell you how to recognise a witch when you see one.”
“Can you always be sure?” I asked.
“No,” she said, “you can´t. And that´s the trouble… But you can always guess. In the first place,” she said, " a real witch is nearly always wearing gloves when you meet her.”
“Surely not always,” I said. “What about in the summer when it´s hot?”
“EVEN in the summer. She has to. Do you want to know why?” my grandmother said. (,,,)

A reminder about next class... i.e. tomorrow

Hi everybody

I refer you to this post so that tomorrow we can work  all along the same line.

Here´s the link  http://soundsmynewworld.blogspot.com.ar/

And ... here´s the post...jic

Class 26-IX-2016
Aword first on the outcome of the last follow-up:

After analysing the results of the last follow-up, I conclude that you need to adjust the studying procedure you follow in this course.

A high percentage of you ended up being just above or below the passing mark; only a few passed and many absent students add to this grim picture.

A further conclusion Ana and me perceived is that the amount of time you listen to the audios AND record yourselves AND evaluate your own performances, is far from enough - which is reflected in your oral production.

The elements that lack are precision in the souds we have already worked with, most of which were corrected and you were guided on how to hit right on them; the linking up of words in the connected texts - after all, speaking is made up of words combined together into a swift and carrying way for the ear; the marking of prominent words and the immediate influence on the rhythm of your speech - this is gained in the first step through immitation of the audio, and later on, by your own pre-analysis of the text to work with, with the prediction of these peaks of prominent words which will mark the rhythm of the passages or dialogues.

These are the steps we´ve been transmitting to you from the very beginning of the year. By this time, there should be evidence that they are being incorporated... This is not the situation by far.

Being a fluent English speaker in other situations than Práctica en Laboratorio de Idiomas I, is not enough to master the tasks we expect in this course. This course goes further than simply communicating in English - the aim is more professional than this. You´re training yourselves and studying to become outstanding professionals in the teaching profession, not just speakers of English.

Next class - 26-IX-16

A.- To evaluate how you apply the guidelines detailed above, next class class bring in a pendrive or any digital media that can be connected to a netbook (so, take good car of bringning the necessary wires to connect both devices) the following dialogues of the 2nd part of the term:

           7. In the Library (page 3)  and
         11. A Sore Throat (page 5)

In the same way in which you´ve prepared the text for the follow-ups.

By the way, I´ve checked the links to the audios posted in the 2 previuos post and they work wonderfully.

B.- Bring your headsets since they´ll be used intensively.

See you all next class.
